In Memory of a Great Author, Anne McCaffrey

I remember the first book I ever read by Anne McCaffrey, All the Weyrs of Pern, way back in high school. I remember how it made me feel, and how it spurred on an interest in all things dragons. The story was so well written, and drew me in so deeply that I wanted more. I couldn't live without taking another trip to Pern. And then another. And another.

She made millions people feel this way, and yet her books left me feeling like I had a personal connection with both her characters, and her. I cried this morning when I heard she passed on. It hurt just the same as if I'd lost an old friend, though we've never met in real life.

Her stories, and her legacy will live on for many years, resting at the heights of literature with such greats as Tolkein and Eddings.

My only comfort, is that I know she is free, living her dream in the skies of Pern, riding a gold dragon, and blasting thread with gouts of flame from the dragon's breath. All the while with a smile on her face.

Rest well, Anne. You will be sorely missed.

Thanks for reading!
